DOWNTOWN BRANCH YMCA FITNESS CENTER - Oklahoma City, OK

The new Oklahoma City Downtown Branch YMCA was constructed as a result of the irreparable damage created to it’s previous facility by the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995.  The new site is located on the fringe of the downtown urban core and adjacent to the historic Bricktown entertainment district, thus the design concept was to create a facility with an urban sophistication in materials used and an industrial attitude to the selection of finishes and the form of the various spaces.  EIFS, brick, concrete block, and Galvalume finished metal shingles complete the exterior envelope. Warehouse style skylights illuminate the gymnasium.  Ceilings are generally exposed structure except where acoustical treatments were necessary.  Warm tone concrete block is used throughout for all interior walls for it’s low maintenance and durability.  Floors are sealed concrete in most areas.  Exposed wood beams and wood decking are used in the pool area for their inherent resistance to the chemical environment.  The pool deck, pool interior surfaces, and spa are all mosaic tile.  Mechanical systems were integrated and coordinated for minimum impact.  General illumination was achieved with custom designed light fixtures for design continuity and cost economy.  Custom perforated stainless steel panels and sheet steel were used throughout for mirror display and room separators to add to the industrial character of the facility.
